Can you buy a sauna with your HSA or FSA? Is it an eligible expense?

Can you buy a sauna with your HSA or FSA? Is it an eligible expense?

The short answer is yes, you may, as long as you obtain a Letter of Medical Necessity.

We’ve partnered with Truemed to allow you to use your Health Savings Account (HSA) or Flexible Spending Account (FSA) at Nordica. This means you can buy our products with pre-tax dollars, resulting in net savings of 30-40%.

Under standard rules, saunas are not automatically eligible for FSA/HSA payments. However, if a healthcare provider deems a sauna medically necessary and provides a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN), it can qualify as a medical expense.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is TrueMed?

Truemed partners with health and wellness brands like Sauna Heater Supply to help qualified customers use their FSA/HSA funds for health and wellness purchases. They work with a network of medical practitioners who can issue Letters of Medical Necessity (LMNs) to eligible customers, allowing them to save money on approved health-related products.

Truemed is backed by top-tier investors, including functional medicine pioneer Mark Hyman and founders from Eight Sleep and Levels.

Why should I use FSA/HSA funds to buy my sauna/sauna heater?

Using your HSA/FSA funds on eligible products, like a sauna, can lead to significant savings. Because these accounts use pre-tax dollars, you could save 30-40% on average on your sauna purchase at Sauna Heater Supply when using Truemed.

How do I save money with FSA/HSA?

HSA and FSA accounts were designed to help individuals use pre-tax dollars for health-related expenses, including the prevention or treatment of medical conditions.

By using tax-free money, you gain more purchasing power and can save 30-40% compared to using post-tax income for the same purchase.

In 2024, individuals can contribute up to $3,850 per year to an HSA, while families can contribute up to $7,750, with an additional $1,000 allowed for those aged 55 and older. FSA accounts allow individuals to contribute up to $3,050 per year, with employers permitted to add an additional $500.

Depending on your state and tax rate, most individuals can save between $1,000 and $2,000 annually. Using your HSA or FSA funds to purchase a sauna is a smart way to invest in your health while maximizing your tax savings. You can also use a savings calculator to estimate your potential benefits when making an HSA/FSA-eligible purchase.

I don't have an HSA/FSA. Can I still benefit from TrueMed at Sauna Heater Supply?

Unfortunately, Truemed’s services are only available to individuals who have an HSA or FSA account or plan to fund one during open enrollment. If you don’t currently have one, we encourage you to check with your employer for more information on HSA and FSA options and how you might be eligible to enroll.

What is a Letter of Medical Necessity? How is it compliant?

A Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) allows certain wellness purchases to qualify as medical expenses, just like a doctor's visit or prescription medication. With the growing chronic disease crisis in the U.S., thousands of studies highlight that exercise, nutrition, and wellness interventions can be some of the most effective ways to prevent and reverse disease.

An LMN makes exercise-related expenses eligible for HSA/FSA use. Additionally, food, supplements, and other wellness products can qualify as medical expenses if they are used to treat or prevent a condition and a healthcare provider substantiates the need. Your Truemed LMN meets all IRS requirements, ensuring your wellness purchases are fully reimbursable.

Truemed also offers a guarantee—if any HSA/FSA purchase outlined in an LMN is rejected, they will cover the full amount you should have saved. If you have any questions or need assistance, you can reach out to support@truemed.com.

How long does a Letter of Medical Necessity last?

Letters of Medical Necessity are valid for 12 months and must be renewed annually to continue using HSA/FSA funds for eligible purchases.

What are HSA and FSA accounts?

Health Savings Accounts (HSA) and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) are tax-free accounts designed to cover qualified medical expenses. These accounts are typically set up and managed by an HSA or FSA administrator, which you can access through your employer—your HR department can provide more details.

HSAs are usually linked to a high-deductible health plan, and the funds do not expire, allowing you to save and use them over time. FSAs, on the other hand, are not tied to a specific health plan, and contributions are elected annually during open enrollment (October-November) for the following calendar year. Unlike HSAs, FSA funds expire at the end of each calendar year if they are not used.

Unfortunately, HSA and FSA accounts are only available in the U.S., and self-employed individuals who do not have an HSA from a previous employer do not qualify for either account.

What can't you use an HSA for?

Certain items and procedures are not covered by HSA funds, including child care, household care, elective procedures like cosmetic surgery, toiletries, teeth whitening products, and hair removal. Since these expenses do not directly impact a person's overall health or serve a medical necessity, they are not considered qualified medical expenses under HSA guidelines.

Can I checkout with my HSA/FSA card?

Yes, you can use your HSA card, but your FSA card may not process successfully at checkout. Regardless, we recommend completing the Truemed intake survey to obtain a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) for your purchase.

For the best chance of success, we strongly encourage using your regular credit or debit card and then submitting your receipt and LMN for reimbursement through your HSA/FSA provider.

If you have any questions about using your HSA/FSA funds or need more details on the process, feel free to reach out for assistance.

How long does HSA/FSA reimbursement take?

For most FSA/HSA administrators, expenses are typically approved within a few days when submitted with your Truemed Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN). However, processing times may vary depending on your specific administrator.

I don't have enough funds in my HSA/FSA to reimburse the entire purchase. Can I still use TrueMed at Sauna Heater Supply?

Yes, you can still submit for partial reimbursement if you don’t have enough funds to cover the full purchase.

For example, if you buy an eligible item for $2,000 but only have $1,400 in your HSA/FSA account, you can reimburse $1,400 using your tax-free funds, while the remaining $600 would be paid out-of-pocket as usual.

What if my reimbursement if rejected by my provider?

Truemed offers a reimbursement guarantee for purchases made with official Truemed merchant partners, like Sauna Heater Supply. As long as you have available funds in your HSA or FSA account, the Truemed team will work with you to ensure your purchase is fully reimbursed.

Can I use TrueMed for a past purchase?

While specific policies may vary by HSA or FSA administrator, we generally recommend submitting expenses only for purchases made on or after the date listed on your Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) to ensure approval.

Do I need to use TrueMed every time I purchase from Sauna Heater Supply?

If you have already received a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) for purchases with a partner brand, you do not need to complete the survey again as long as your LMN is still valid (within 12 months of issuance).

Are there any fees associated with using TrueMed?

There is no cost to you when shopping with a Truemed partner merchant, making it easy to use your HSA/FSA funds without additional fees.

Will be able to maximize my savings if I haven't contributed to my HSA/FSA?

For most Americans, open enrollment takes place during the last four months of the year. During this time, you can choose to increase your contributions to your HSA or FSA, allowing you to take full advantage of these tax-free funds for eligible purchases with Truemed merchant partners. Beginning January 1st, you’ll have access to your entire HSA balance for approved wellness expenses, such as healthy food and exercise-related purchases. These funds will be automatically deducted tax-free from your paycheck in equal installments throughout the year by your HSA administrator.

Can I be reimbursed for products purchased in the past before my medical recommendation was issued?

Reimbursing purchases made before the issuance of a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) is generally not allowed and is not recommended by Truemed. To ensure compliance, it’s best to submit expenses only for purchases made on or after the date listed on your LMN.
